Taiwan Ministry of Labor Develops New Electrolytic Hypochlorous Acid Water Production Technology

In view of the demand for environmental control in the workplace,  Institute of Labor, Occupational Safety And Health (ILOSH)  Ministry of Labor has recently cooperated with the NTU Department of Biomechatronics Engineering to develop a high concentration hypochlorous acid disinfection water manufacturing technology based on electrolysis reaction, which has the characteristics of high efficiency antibacterial effect, no animal skin irritation, no storage of dangerous raw materials, etc. It has been used in dental institutions and egg farms, and has good antibacterial effects.


1. Highly effective disinfection:
Hypochlorous acid has been shown in relevant domestic and foreign research literature to be highly effective in killing various types of bacteria, viruses, molds and other microorganisms because of its multiple antibacterial pathways. Compared with bleach, hydrogen peroxide and alcohol, it has the advantages of fast and effective antibacterial effect. Domestic and foreign research has confirmed that the solution of hypochlorite molecules generated by electrolysis can reach 99.999% antibacterial efficacy in three minutes or even less. 


2. No health side effects:
Hypochlorous acid has been widely used in the U.S. and Japanese industries for various purposes such as disinfection in medical institutions, food safety and environmental sanitation, etc. The safety of hypochlorous acid has also been tested by animal skin application and feeding tests, with no skin irritation and no adverse health effects. 


3. No storage of dangerous raw materials:
Generally, it is produced by passing chlorine into water, or by using hydrochloric acid (HCl) and bleach water (sodium hypochlorite NaOCl). Currently, bleach and hydrogen peroxide commonly used for disinfection and antibacterial purposes in Taiwan have a residual pungent smell and irritation, and are difficult to apply to skin rinses and wipes for personal hygiene maintenance, while other disinfectants such as alcohol or iodine, the main ingredients do not have a broad antibacterial effect.

The electrolytic disinfection water manufacturing technology developed by the Institute and the Department of Biotechnology of National Taiwan University (NTU) uses saline as the raw material, which breaks through the limitation of the previous expensive cost and can quickly produce highly concentrated hypochlorite ingredients that can be diluted in large quantities for skin rinsing, wiping and environmental control in a short period of time. This technology has been tested in dental institutes and caged egg farms and has achieved 70-80% bacterial inhibition against bacteria and other biological gels.
